Ruth Regina Schultz, late of Weyburn, SK passed away on February 24, 2026 at the age of 105 years.
She was predeceased by her parents, Emil and Pauline Grams; husband, Albert Schultz; daughter, Diane Erickson; grandson-in-law, Chad Johnstone; sisters: Millie (Henry) Reich, Mathilde (John) Kruger, Elsie (Emil) Wegwitz, Linda (Dan) Byam, Gunda (Leo) Chinski; Martha (Sandy) Davis; Emma (Ernie) Schultz; brothers, Ludwig Grams, Herbert (Ivy) Grams, Rudy (Anne) Grams, Reiny (Betty) Grams.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Joanne (Roger) Holdstock of Weyburn, SK; grandchildren: Janice (Barrie) Carson, Marla Holdstock, Ryan (Kali) Holdstock; great grandchildren: James Carson, Melissa Carson, William Bushell, Hadley, Rhea and Maren Holdstock; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Ruth Regina Schultz was born July 19, 1920 to Emil and Pauline Grams in Lang, Saskatchewan. Later, the family moved to the farm at McTaggart where her and her 11 siblings grew up. She attended Waverly School until grade 8, when she began doing housework at various neighboring farms.
When she was 17 years old, her dad gave her a button accordion. There were no music teachers in those days so she had to figure out how to play it on her own and she learned to play songs by ear. This would turn out to be her most treasured gift as there was many a family gathering that Ruth brought out the button accordion which she played well into her 90’s.
In 1942, she met Albert Schultz, who was a private in the army at the time. They were married on September 23, 1943. They lived with Albert’s parents on the farm by Cedoux, then in 1946, they moved to their first home, which was a sod house on the neighboring Lucyk Farm. Their first daughter, Diane, was born in 1946 and second daughter, Joanne was born in 1954.
When Albert started working for CP Rail, they moved into the station house along the tracks in Cedoux. In 1960, they purchased their home in Cedoux across from the school house and church. In 1992, after Albert had heart surgery, the difficult decision was made to sell the house in Cedoux and move into Weyburn. They moved to an apartment in downtown Weyburn above Mr Ribs. Albert passed away in 1996 and in 2004, Ruth moved to an apartment at Bison Manor where she continued to reside until December 2025. There she enjoyed the companionship of new and old friends and enjoyed the various activities.
She was very honored to be chosen to be War Mother at the 2022 Remembrance Day Service. This was a special day for her and the family.
Although their home in Cedoux was small, it was often the gathering point for family and friends. There was always room for one more. She was known to break out the accordion on these occasions accompanied by someone playing on the deerskin drum.
Ruth was blessed to have a close relationship with her eleven siblings and families. Sadly, she had to say the final good-bye over the years to all of them as she is the last of her generation to pass away. Ruth also took great pride in staying in touch with her numerous nieces and nephews and appreciated every phone call or visit with them.
Ruth enjoyed playing bingo, playing cards, doing puzzles or watching game shows on TV.
Her buttertarts were famous, and were the most requested treat. One of her most cherished moments was when her butter tarts won the class at Weyburn Fair and were auctioned off at a fundraiser which resulted in a bidding war. She couldn’t believe someone would pay that much for tarts! Some of her other well known dishes were her perogies, borscht, cucumber salad, and cabbage rolls.
Above all else, she loved to get together with her family. She enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren and then in later years, her greatchildren. She rarely missed attending their various activities, whether it was birthdays, sports, concerts or 4H.
Last year, we were fortunate to able to celebrate her 105th birthday and planned a come and go tea. But she requested that we had to plan a supper as well to continue the party after the tea. The next day was spent playing cards with relatives and she did win her fair share of games and money. She showed no signs of being tired, as long as there was company around she was not ready to go call it a day.
We are thankful for her long and blessed life that she was able to enjoy. A life well lived, caring and kind until the end.
